Our growth and expansion into the urban freeriding and dirt-jumping scene for MTB's has been slow and organic, with no heavy promo or marketing behind these efforts. This strategy has been by design. We've known for some time that lots of MTB riders have used our BMX parts on the mountain bikes. Heckour Canadian distributor spec'ed SNAFU parts on some of their freeride bikes ten years ago. We've taken our time with our approach because we are working on some stuff for UDJ MTB's that's never been seen on stock bikes, and we wanted to make sure we got it right.
Stuff like our new AstroGlide top cable and XL Y-cable for mechanical disk brakes. We chronicled our skunkworks testing on this set-up on our blog this fall, and our resident pro Mike Montgomery is testing it as we speak. Our 4130 chromoly MTB handlebars are another SNAFU MTB work in progress, and they've proven to be very popular with riders in the scene. Of course, our Mayweather cranks are well respected in the MTB scene, but the choices for European BB's that can withstand the rigors of aggressive freeriding are limited. That's why we are working on our N.EXT BB. The N stands for New, and the EXT stands for external bearings. Think of Shimano's proven external BB, but with enormous sealed bearings for 19mm OD spindles and you have any idea what we're talking about. When our N.EXT BB is available early next year, it will make running any BMX crank system with a 19mm spindle on MTB's with 73mm Euro BB shells super easy.
If you're really into what SNAFU's been doing for the MTB scene, you may already be aware of our Crenshaw Project UDJ frame. We started development on this chassis last summer, and built first prototypes for ride testing this fall. This full 4130 chromoly frame features all the advanced build specs that have become popular on modern BMX bikesthings like tapered rear stays, thin-walled small OD main tubes, an integrated head tube, and removable U-Brake bosses and cable guides, for instancewith 135mm dropout spacing, a 73mm BB shell and aggressive 71/71 frame geometry with a roomy 22.5" long T/T and super-short 15.5" chainstays for handling and maneuverability.
It's a package that's getting great reviews from our test riders, and when it's for sale next spring you'll be able to get it in two different complete bike specs: The fully-spec'ed Crenshaw for parks and trails, and the Hawthorne for pure trails and street. We're proud of our first frame and complete bikes, and the fact that they're designed for MTB's says a ton about where SNAFU is headed in our second decade.
MTB Tires
When our Rim Job and Knob Job BMX tires dropped nine years ago, they helped change the game. Before then, most BMX tires were knobbies, low PSI and prone to punctures and tearing. By beefing up the sidewalls, rounding off the cross-section and increasing the thread count in our casings, we made BMX tires faster rolling, smoother in turns and able to hold high pressures for greater resistance to pinch flats. Our Rim Job and Knob Job tires have symmetrical tread patterns, which means they roll smooth in both directions. Our team riders prefer a Rim Job in the rear (and who doesn’t?) The tight tread pattern with textured surface churns up less dirt under torque and braking, so it’s less abusive to fresh-built trails. The Knob Job has larger traction blocks and more knob spacing, so it’s better for turning at aggressive angles. Both tires are 26” x 2.35”, so they fit nicely behind the bottom bracket on frames with super-short chainstays. The inflation rating on both tires is 65 PSI, but we’ve had them up to 80 on bikes with tight-fighting double-walled rims.
4130 MTB Handlebar
Chromoly is the only material we or any other BMX brand uses to build high-end BMX handlebars, so why not for MTB’s? SNAFU 4130 MTB handlebars are the first and only bar on the market with a 31.8mm OD stem section, so they’ll fit modern MTB stems from Thompson, Easton and dozens of others. The wall section of our 725mm wide (29.5”) handlebar tapers from 1.2mm at the center to 0.9mm at the bar end to provide shock absorption, flex memory and fatigue strength unrivalled by aluminum. The 22.2mm (7/8”) OD bar ends fit all MTB and BMX grips and controls.

Anorexic Pedals
High speeds demand steep lean angles in fast, tight corners, and this isn’t something most track frames with low BB heights are designed to handle. Short crankarms and narrow pedals are the solution to this problem, but finding a small pedal that’s also strong enough for street tricks can be difficult. Our Anorexic pedal is just 75mm wide and a scant 19mm thick. These trim dimensions maximize pedal clearance in turns, and that’s a good thing. For lightness and strength, our Anorexic pedal features an extruded and CNC machined alloy body with a proven MTB spindle with a bushing and needle bearings. The result is an elegant, high-tech pedal that delivers style, traction, steep lean angles and strength.
